the boat theory
The theory began on a Monday night drinking wine with gal pals hashing out life and love.
It goes like this: At some point in every woman's life, she has felt like a man was laughing and living it up on his boat with friends while she was doggy paddling to stay afloat anywhere near his world.
At the moment she's about to drown, he will throw her a little something (a floaty/life preserver/"hey, baby, I'm sorry"/ "you look so pretty"). But, he never lets her on his boat.
I say to women: Get your own boat. Make your life about you first. Seek God, friendships, a career, and adventures that are wildly "not you" so that you find the real you. Build your own boat so that you may choose, not accept, your life and love.
In building my boat, I leaned on God, skidded through law school, sweated for friendships, and embraced children. Every day I choose to be me, love who I love and do what I do. I must maintain (sometimes overhaul) and appreciate my boat with gratitude and open arms. All aboard!
